Hey ladies I’ve decided to compile a list of football terms that will make you sound like a professional and gain extra points with your husband or boyfriend. Just slip one or two of these phrases or terms into conversation. He will probably respond with a blank stare an then return to reality with a proud smile and a high five. We’ll start with the basics and simple positions of the game. You Go Girl!

The Basics
Touchdown = 6 points
Field goal = 1 point
Go for two = 2 point conversion

Team Mechanics
Offense – the part of the team that scores touchdowns
Defense – their main goal is to keep the other team from scoring
Special Teams – they handle the kick-offs, field goals, and punts

Positions
Quarterback – he throws touchdowns by either passing or running the option, which is keeping it running or pitching it off to a running back – (only done in College football)
Offensive Line – they protect the quarterback by blocking the opponent
Receiver - they better be fast and have good hands to catch the pass
Running Back – they are quick and can usually be found behind in the back field
Tight End - they are usually tall and make the quick short receptions (my personal favorite position)
Defensive Line – they’re goal is to sack the quarterback
Linebacker – line up in the  middle of the defensive found 4 or 5 yards off the line of scrimmage. They’re role is to stop the run and cover the tight ends and running backs in pass coverage.
Kicker - I think you’ll get this one…I hope.

College football didn’t disappoint. In week 2 the theme was comeback. Everyone can appreciate the comeback (except the team that isn’t coming back of course). The first comeback kid was Central Michigan over Michigan State with a field goal to win at the end as time expired. The little team that could…did.

Notre Dame is the comeback kid who has been trying to come back from public opinion. They looked much improved, but couldn’t come up with the win against Michigan.

The UCLA Bruins came into Knoxville with a West coast stroll. The Tennessee QB threw 4 picks, but luckily for him the Bruins only converted 2 of those possessions into field goals. If that was a lucky mustache I would shave it asap.

I have to mention the Mizzou Tigers because I obviously love my home team. I didn’t get to watch the team, but I tracked it on my phone and it went from 10-0, 13-6, 20-6 and then 20-26 MIZZOU! We won…not sure how it happened, but glad it did!

Now the last game of the night. Ohio St. vs. USC. The horse shoe was full of red and the volume was on high. The trojans marched in and made their presence known. The game was close throughout, but Ohio State’s inability to run the ball and manage the game under pressure became the deciding factors. That and the fact Barkley can’t grow a mustache. Seriously, the 18-year-old, peach fuzzed, true freshman played like a…39-year-old Brett Favre! The last drive that resulted in a TD showed us all USC is who we thought they were. Legit.

What a game?! It was one of the most action packed games of the season. Each side played with serious intensity and speed. The passes, the runs, the kicks! All of it was on.

Bobby Bowden remained a constant on the sidelines for the 44th season in a row! He smacked his gum and watched the game, I mean really how much coaching “play calling” does the guy really do?

After this game, I’m reconsidering the ACC significance in college football. Miami’s Jacory Harris is tough and on target. Florida State’s Christian Ponder is waaayyy smart and likes to throw the long ball (which I like), but who really had my attention was Greg Cooper. Now, that guy is Legit.

Thought s on the first College Football weekend…or 4 days of football?

The day has finally arrived! College football 2009 is here! I love this time of the year. Waking up to Kirk Herbstreit….and…the football of course. I get my Lee Corso’s #2 pencil out and write out the games of the day.

Today the obvious games to watch were the Mizzou Tigers vs. the Fightin’ Illini. This rivalry played in the dome in St. Louis is always the first game of the season and it’s anyone’s for the taking. Illinois was expected to win, but instead lost 37-9. Mizzou-rah!

Then there is the STATE vs. Jackson State. The first time a SWAC team has played a SEC team. It was good for all the fans and helped each team to have a dress rehearsal and find holes in their operation.  Mullen exposed the spread offense and his secret weapon Chris Relf who threw for 157 yards, two touchdowns including his own 5-yard run. The dawgs put 45 confidence points on the scoreboard and look ahead to their next game to keep the faith.

There is always an upset and today that award went to the Oklahoma Sooners. With Sam Bradford getting injured right before the half with a sprained shoulder ACL, the boomer left the sooners. They struggled to get the momentum back in the second half and lost 14-13.

And so the story goes. This season will be full of drama, intrigue, and team spirit.

Wow the Friday night lights of Jackson are back on!

For me the game of the week is the Brandon vs. Clinton! I mean wow, what a way to start the season.  These rivals will face off tonight in Clinton, the longest running matchup. They have been playing for the past 63 years! Clinton has won the last 5 years, but with QB Caleb Jett, Brandon might just end that streak.

The Sonic Game of the week is Madison Central vs. Hattiesburg.  Madison Central is the team to watch this year.  With the loss of major players, South Penola starts the season with weaker roster, so MC has all the potential to dominate.

football season is almost here!  I can almost taste the grilled burgers and dogs, the salty potato chips, and sweet tea. 

Football season is upon us once again, so start thinking about your pre-season favorites.  Post them the first of August to see who is favored local, statewide and nationally.

Well, he really did it.  Mo Williams managed to convince Lebron to come to Jackson, Mississippi!  (personally, I think Lebron lost a bet to Mo, but I’m just sayin…)

Here are a few photos from the Mo William’s basketball camp.  It’s too bad he didn’t spend more time with the kiddos…he had to head to the mall…seriously, the northpark mall?  He’s a superstar, he can do whatever he wants!

It’s a sad week for sports fans.  Mississippi native and NFL Quarterback, Steve McNair is gone.  In what most speculate a murder-suicide, McNair was shot and killed.  It is tragic. untimely. senseless. confusing. heartbreaking.

here is a good article that gives insight into who he was as a player and a person.  McNair spent time with Christian’s family when he was drafted to the Houston Oilers.  Christian’s dad shares about his special relationship with this one-of-a-kind QB.
