There was a lot of watching at the College World Series when Southern Miss was on the field. Players from Texas and North Carolina sat back in the box and watched ball after ball pass over the plate. Golden Eagle fans watched as their winning streak came to a streaking halt and fans here at home watched and tried every superstitious method we could try to keep Texas from scoring.
There is one person, however, who was not watching…Corky Palmer. He would cast a few glimpses from underneath his hat, crossing his arms and pray for a strike…or think about the beach. I so enjoyed cheering for the underdog of the College World Series. They really hung with the Longhorns and fought UNC, but in the end it just wasn’t enough. The cinderella story was over.
The team from Mississippi will remember their first trip to Omaha forever…or until next year.
